I just did a YouTube video where I tackled the not-so-tasty topic of toxic thoughts. Just like a bag of forgotten potatoes, if left unchecked, these pesky little thoughts can become downright rotten and start stinking up your mental space. But fear not, because today we’re turning those negative spuds into positive blooms with some timeless, scientifically-backed tips—sprinkled with a bit of humor, of course!
1. Be Careful How You Handle Rotten Thoughts
Let’s start by treating those toxic thoughts like a carton of expired milk—(or rotten potatoes) acknowledge them, but don’t let them linger. It’s about swapping mental “Uh ohs” with “You got this!” Remember, even superheroes have bad days; they just don’t dwell on them.
2. Don’t Focus on the Negative
My second tip is brought to you by the age-old wisdom of William Blake “You become what you behold,” and the great prophet Isaiah “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you” Isaiah 26:3.
Focus on the positive side of life. Practicing gratitude for the good things that you have will keep life smelling a lot better than being on your pity pot in a room with rotten potatoes.
3. Get Rid of the Rotten Potatoes and Clean the Rest
Sometimes it’s just about washing away what’s gone bad and keeping the good. Reflect on what thoughts need tossing and which ones are worth keeping. As they say, “One bad potato (or apple) doesn’t spoil the batch… unless you let it.”
4. Don’t Be Like Everyone Else and Be Negative
Everyone might be jumping on the “Negativity Bandwagon,” but alignment isn’t always positive! Take the road less traveled—one that leads to nurturing thought gardens instead of prickly patches of pessimism.
- Romans 12:2 says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
Think of it as a holy intervention for a mental detox and neural pathway transformation!
5. You Can Get Rid of Toxic Thoughts for Good
Easier said than done? Perhaps. But, remember, when you keep your mind busy with positivity, there’s less room for negativity to crash the party. So, practice makes permanent—get those mental reps in!
- “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Phillipians 4:13
6. Time to Take Charge of Your Stinkin’ Thinkin’
Now it’s time to get tough with that mental clutter. Time for the ‘toxic thought’ bouncer to step in and escort those uninvited guests out!
- Philippians 4:8-9: “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.”
Remember, our thoughts cause our feelings and our feelings cause behavior so when we think- Oh No- this is terrible! We get stressed because we are afraid of something. Stress causes anger, and then we do stuff to feel better.
It is all rooted in toxic thoughts, and FYI, you are not powerless against them. Just a little effort, a sprinkle of humor, and a dash of divine inspiration can pave the way for a mind as fresh as a right out of the ground baby reds, or Yukon gold potatoes!
