God’s Not Finished

As I head into the later part of my life, at age 60, I am nowhere near being done with the mission God has given me, and I know that God’s not finished with me yet either. I’m sitting on my sunlit porch surrounded by trees that gently sway back and forth as they whisk the wind to give me a literal breath of fresh air. As I contemplate the mission I am embarking on, to help others share their legacy, I think back to a few years ago and why I believe it is so important that everyone, especially the wise elderly folks, not give in to the notion that you have no purpose just because you can’t do the job you used to do or because no one will hire you.
In fact, if we are truly interested in finding purpose and meaning in life and are willing to seek out our Maker, we will discover that there was a reason why we were created differently, with unique gifts, talents, abilities, and experiences. We were chosen and empowered to make a difference in the world and to share our life story with others to leave a legacy of HOPE for the generations to come.

Your Age Does Not Determine Your Purpose

I will never forget the sirens and the flashing red lights that woke us at 3:00 AM on that summer night. It was a rush to see what the excitement was right outside our home. I came to the end of the porch, and I saw the officers and the medical personnel gathered around the tree that is only about 20 yards from where I am sitting right now. We watched and waited, expecting the ambulance to whisk whoever it was away to the safety of the Aspirus/Wausau Hospital, but they didn’t leave. As day was breaking, the coroner pulled up in the hearse and “the body” was loaded to be taken to the morgue.
There was a remnant of the events, and the grieving family left behind. They did not see the magnitude of their elderly loved one’s despair. He had become ill and unable to care for himself.  He knew that he would have to leave the home he had lived in his whole life to stay with relatives. He felt he had no purpose, so he went outside.  They said it appeared that he leaned the gun against the tree and ended his life. A heartbreaking story that happens more frequently than we’d like to admit.  In the last 20 years, suicides in women over 65 saw a 44% increase.

We are Not Finished Changing

Our Brains don’t like change, and as we get older, we are forced to let go of expectations that we have had our entire life.  Expectations around what “should” or “shouldn’t” be our “job.” This, on top of letting go of ideas around how our bodies should behave and shouldn’t, or how our minds should work.  As we become older and wiser, the goal is to “retire” so that we can find peace, but retirement brings a lot of worry about what will be.  It’s also an adjustment period to move from our career to our purpose. Your purpose stays with you even after retirement.
God gives us opportunities for change and growth so that when we reach “old age,” we have the stories to tell and lessons to teach the younger loved ones in our lives.  But the opportunity to share our stories and lessons is not reserved only for our family and close friends, but for crowds of people.  There are so many people who need to hear your story, see your light, and feel your love.

You’re Not Finished, and Neither am I

One of my missions is to help anyone who wants to leave that legacy to do it NOW. Don’t wait. Life is too short, and as another one of my friends, at the age of 43, dropped dead 2 weeks ago of an undiagnosed heart condition, we just can’t afford to wait until we have time to write that book, or paint that picture, or publish that poem, or record that story. The time is NOW – whether you’re in your 40s or your 70s.  People need to hear your story, and God wants you to share your story with others.  That’s why He put you in their life’s path.
My life’s work is now to help others, particularly Christians, to share their experience, strength, and hope with those they were created to reach. I am looking forward to those who hear what God is saying to them and choose to join our team of legacy seekers who are working to change the world with what God has given them.
